Sites like Youtube, Facebook and Even Microsoft’s own MSNBC are pushing people to upgrade.
IE6 handles just about everything pretty terrible but in general its terrible at handling CSS which forces programmers to hack up their beautifully crafted code to make it work for the non-standards based browser.
They don’t like transparent images and force you to use hacky scripts to handle transparency along with major markup tweaks for controlling pages.
We still have municipality and corporate clients that force us to be IE6 compliance and we are happy to do it we just charge a whole lot more and tell our designers going into the project to just turn down the level of sexy.
Avoiding transparency and lots of interactive javascript helps cut down the drag that the browser handles. Though Jquery is really great at being backwards compatible its just less hassle to avoid going into a project.
